Evergreen's summer has a hard stop, and it's built into the operating schedule of the town's own recreation district. Today is the last day of daily hours at Evergreen Lake's boathouse. After this, the paddleboards and canoes only come out on weekends until the season closes for good in early September.
That's not a mood. It's a posted schedule, and it lines up almost exactly with the biggest event of the summer landing in town on the same day.
The Lake Runs Out of Weekday Hours Today
Evergreen Park and Recreation District has run boat and paddleboard rentals at Evergreen Lake on a daily schedule since May 26, with Monday through Thursday hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and paddleboards available even earlier, from 8 a.m. Weekend hours have stretched to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. That daily rhythm holds through today, August 16. Starting August 19, EPRD moves to a fall schedule that runs weekends only through September 4, and then the rentals close for the year.
If you've been meaning to get out on the water on a random Tuesday afternoon, this week is the last chance. After Wednesday, a weekday paddle isn't an option again until next spring.
The lake itself has more history behind it than most people paddling across it realize. It's a reservoir, created by a dam built on Bear Creek in 1928, right next to what is now Cactus Jack's Saloon in downtown Evergreen. The saloon predates most of what's changed around it, and it's still the anchor building for one of the events that's about to shift its own schedule this month, which we'll get to.
The evening paddle sessions the district ran earlier this summer have already wrapped for the year. The daily rental window closing today is the next domino. The concert series is the one after that, and it falls next week.
The Festival Landing on the Cutoff Date
Mountain Music Fest returns to Buchanan Park today, noon to 9 p.m., and this year it's an official stop on the Bacon Brothers' People in the World Tour, meaning Michael and Kevin Bacon are headlining a festival built and run by area students, in a recreation district that serves roughly 23,000 residents across Evergreen, Bergen Park, Indian Hills, Kittredge, and Marshdale. The festival is presented by the Wooden Hawk Foundation, and it hands students real roles in ticketing, stage production, sound, and lighting. A Conifer High School junior is serving as stage manager this year, and an Evergreen High School senior is co-emceeing the day. Proceeds go back into local school programs.
The lineup beyond the Bacons includes Neoni, Christie Huff, Michael Morrow and the Culprits, and Grady and the Hootin' Bandits, an Evergreen-grown act performing on their home turf. There's a Mountain Merchants market for local vendors and food trucks on site all day.
The timing isn't a coincidence worth ignoring. The festival that draws the biggest crowd of the summer happens on the exact day the lake's daily rental hours end. If you're building a day around both, plan on arriving early or carpooling, since Buchanan Park fills fast on festival days.

The August 19 concert at Dedisse Park is the last date on the district's Summer Concert Series calendar this year. The series alternated between Buchanan Park and the Lake House through the summer, and this is where it ends, at the lake, on a Wednesday evening.

The Growing Out West farmers market has run every Thursday morning through the summer at Cactus Jack's, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with produce vendors, soap makers, and the rest of the usual mix. For its final stretch in September, the market moves to Tuesdays instead, same hours, same location. Show up on a Thursday looking for the market and you'll find an empty lot.
It's a small detail, easy to miss buried in a district newsletter, but it's the same pattern showing up a third time. The lake's rental hours change on a fixed date. The concert series has a fixed final show. The market changes its day of the week rather than simply ending, which means the read-across for showing up unannounced gets less forgiving as the season winds down, not more.
